This depends on many things like security, standards support, features.
I use opera for its fastness.

Microsoft is slowly making IE faster... but they have a lot more things to consider.  For Microsoft, IE's use in Microsoft systems and networks is just as important as the internet so it has a lot of code and compatibility issues that Firefox and Chrome don't have to deal with.

    Assisted Solution

It boils down to efficiency. The more efficient the code is, the fewer resources it needs, and thus, the faster things can be done. IE for a long time was fairly bloated, and so was slow in comparison to Firefox, Opera, etc. Firefox keeps getting things added on, and so now is not as resource friendly as it was, and so a bit slower than it used to be. IE has been trimmed down, because MS was forced to compete again.
