Website Optimization

Hi All,

I have a website that I would like it to appear in search engines like google, yahoo, MSN.
Right now, when I lookup it up by keywords, it does not appear in any way at all. It only apear if I type the website name.

How can I have my website apear when I use keywords. I would like to know if I can have it in the first search result. Also, what other suggestions or recommandation that you suggest for me to do with my website to have a greater number of visitors/hits.

Please let me know in details your thoughts. :)

Thank you

To appear in the search results, your web site needs to be popular for something so that other people will link to it.  To get to the first place in the search results, you have to be the most popular in the world for that search.  When you do your keyword search, notice how many results are returned for it.  You have to be more popular than all of them to be first.

There are things you can do to improve your situation.  Sign up for Google Webmaster Tools http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/ , create a site map, and upload it to your account.  Then Google will know all about your web site.  Advertise your site to people who would be interested in it.  Notice that Google has been advertising it's services on TV recently and they are one of the biggest advertising firms in the world now.
If you post a link to the site we may be able to help you with suggestions on how to make it more friendly to search engines.  There are a nuber or formatting and coding optimizations that Cause Google to rank the site higher.

The most important thing you can do is get quality links to your site.  High ranked sites that link to you increase your page rank because Google considers it more important if high ranked sites link to you.

COBOLdinosaur, I am not sure if I can post the site here for privacy reason but I would love to hear some of your suggestions.

Then why would you want it indexed at all by a search engine?
The first item on the list of thing for SEO is open availability.  Google exposes the inner working of the 'net and of sites.  They are very co-operative about not exposing private areas and data a site indicates is not intended for the public.  So if it is a private site there is no point in looking at Google to index it.

I can't give much advice without seeing the site.  A lot of detailed SEO has to do with how the site is presented and coded.
