Can Android Acer A500 use a barcode scanner and the onscreen keyboard at the same time?

I have just purchased an Acer Iconia A500 and want to use it in our warehouse to scan in products into a web based inventory system we have.
When I plug in the scanner at the moment it allows me to scan but then the keyboard is not available until I unplug the scanner from the USB port.
The scanner also doesnt seem to ENTER at the end of the scan I need to click ok or next on the screen.

The problem I have is that I need to scan an item and then press Enter and then because the keyboard disables itself I cannot enter an amount without unplugging the scanner from the USB port.

I need the USB scanner and the keyboard to work at the same time or alternatively use the camera of the Acer and a barcode reader for Android that can read barcodes from within the browser.

Hope that all made sense. TIA

Might I suggest a Bluetooth Scanner instead?

I suspect that the Barcode scanner is presenting itself as USB keyboard emulation and as the tablet has an external one plugged in, it disables the pop-up/on-screen keyboard?

Do you have options to change the way the scanner behaves over USB?

Don't know if you got this figured out yet, but here's a link:

Here's a video. It's showing a iPad, but it also works for android.
