outgoing mail server failed

I have a dedicated server at Fasthosts

For sometime I was able to use for the outgoing and incoming mail servers.

Then the outgoing mail server refused to function. I then had to use

I could find no reason for this and wonder if the experts here could advise me as to reasons why this has occoured.

    It is possible BT has SMTP blocking whereby you cant connect to your server on port 25. Ask fasthosts to set your server to listen on port 25 and 587 and then you should be able to use both. Or you can contact BT with regards removing the SMTP block.

    Its just to prevent home users computers which have a larger chance of viruses from using there network to send spam.
