Symantec Backup Exec 2010 R3 - VSS Errors

I have this identical problem on 2 servers, in completely different sites (different customers)

Both running SBS2008, one Std and one Premium.

Historically they have been faultless and have never had any problems, with backup or otherwise.

Now each job fails with:

Backup- CAFSDC - AOFO: Initialization failure on: "C:". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).

V-79-10000-11226 - VSS Snapshot error. The Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) snapshot provider selected returned: "Unexpected provider error". Ensure that all provider services are enabled and can be started. Check the Windows Event Viewer for details.

Backup - AOFO: Initialization failure on: "D:". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).

Backup- D:Unable to open the item D:\WSUS\WsusContent\BA\BIT464B.tmp - skipped.

Not sure how to fix this? A few searches point to AOFO but I dont see why it would work, then not work after no configuration changes on either server.

Both have been rebooted several times and are 100% up to date.

Check the following;

1) your system drive is fully fragmented.
2) more than 15% free space available
30 check status of the snapshot providers, could be a conflicting issue or provider needs to be re-registered.

run te following from the command prompt (elevated command promp)

vssadmin list providers
vssadmin list writers

post your results

cheers

Hi

I managed to resolve this in the end, by specifically telling Backup Exec to use Microsoft's VSS Writers...however a bit baffled as to why I suddenly need to do this.
