I deleted the back start menu items from the profiles on the server yet the broken links keep coming back.

Which ones?

If you're talking about things such as command prompt, they're added programatically.

Other things are in the all users or default users profile paths.

For the former, if you can, I would use XA 6.5 which can remove them programatically.

For the latter, the correct method that won't corrupt anything is a bit long-winded (assuming Windows 2008/2008R2 for the OS):

Log on as a new, non-administrative user; Customise the start menu, desktop etc as you see fit. Log off that user and log back in as an administrative user.

Right-click My Computer and choose properties; Click on Advanced system settings and then the User Profiles settings button.

Highlight the profile you want to become the default, and click Copy To. Click on browse and copy to the default user path. Acknowledge the warning.
