Tell him to either bring the Laptop to so you can connect it to an external display, or have him find such a display and then check if it displays to it. Also boot the PC using the PartedMagic LiveCD. If it displays correctly then it isn't the graphic card, but more likely something with the OS:<br />

Not too sure on the video display being dead. If that were the case, would the Dell logo appear? Can he/she do an F8 at that point and get into safe mode?
