How to connect a Mac to a Windows VPN

I found a partial answer to this question on this thread:

Basically the instructions were: Well, Mac has a built-in VPN client, like Windows, that you can add and configure from the System Preferences app in the Network section. It's pretty straightforward.

But being only a PC person i need more steps. If someone could elaborate on it that would be cool.
