Print a banner page between print jobs HP 4250

Greetings,

I would like to have my HP 4250 print a banner page that shows the date, time, user that printed, machine name, (whatever) between each job. We are using an HP4250n printer. I have "enable LPD printing" checked but no results. We are using IP based printing, not using a print server.

Enable Separator Pages. Go to printer Properties, click the Advanced tab and then the Separator Pages button and select a file. PCL.SEP is probably the best one to use.

pcl.sep is the standard Windows separator page used with PCL5 printer drivers.

For PostScript drivers, pscript.sep is the standard (simple) page, but this doesn't add any data.

PostScript separator files sysprint.sep and sysprintj.sep are also available; not sure just what they do.

Files are held in %Windows%\system32 folder.

I have 200 systems printing to this printer so not practical to do a manual setting on each system. I may have to switch it over to a print server. Hopefully there is another way? I was hoping i could tell jetdirect to do it....(?)

If the 200 PCs all print via a server, you only need to change the setting on the server. If they all print direct to the printer, then you have a job ahead. In that case you should consider using a server - for that number of PCs a server is by far the best way to go.

Some printers have built-in banner pages, but I don't think HP printers do.

I agree (as usual) with hdhondt's advice.
But before you start all that work, bear in mind that the separator page mechanism may not provide you with all of the variable data that you want.

See (for example) http://www.windowsnetworking.com/kbase/windowstips/windowsxp/admintips/network/sharedprinterseparatorpageforwindows2000andwindowsxp.html for a brief summary of the standard separator pages.

Experiment first (with a separator page set on one PC) to check what you get, and whether it satisfies your requirements.
Of course, if it doesn't, you are entering the realm of having to write your own drivers, or filters!

OK guys thanks. The standard sep page gave enough info but we will have to do it on each PC. We have been looking for a reason to set this one up on the print server and now we will have to do it.

Thanks for the help
