Xenserver 6.0 on Dell 710 servers with broadcom BCM5709 - very slow network

Hi,

I have 2 Dell 710 servers, both running Xenserver 6.0 and both exhibiting extremely slow network throughput.

I have followed a plethora of guides, but they mostly relate to virtual driver settings on Win2k3.

Currently I peak around 1Mbps from a guest to machine external to the host.
Between guests on the same host I get around 800Mbps.

This makes me think it's a physical NIC driver issue on the Host.

The same slowness is evident with connection via DELL gigabit switch, Cisco gigabit switch and even through a 100Mbps Sonicwall port.  Throughput rarely exceeds 1Mbps and if it does, it is by a pitiful amount.

I'm pretty much at my wits end and am contemplating a long weekend to switch everything over to VMWare.

Since P2V converting the Xenserver guests to VMware and rebuilding the Xenserver boxes to VMWare 5.0 we have had no issues.

do you experience any network issues or errors on the physical switch ports?

Zach2001Author Commented:
Hi, not directly on the ports involved - there were a few CRC errors on some other ports though - nothing I would take as serious.  Nothing serious enough to cause link retrains.

On closer inpection it would appear that perhaps all the slowness is actually when via the DELL 5548 - there seems to have been some confusion over the overnight test procedure to try the other switches.

A reboot of the switch fixes the issue for a short period.  2-24 hours.

same problem here. XenServer 6 on R810 in pre-production and we discovered the network bottleneck loading the hosted XenApp with real users. network speed is around 12Mb/s externally but it reach 250Mb/s with machines in same host.
all last week I've read tons of posts with similar problems but mainly on W2K3 and we are on W2K8R2 and I've tried all the TeaskOffLoad tricks both on VIF and PIF but no improvements.
actually I've moved everything on VMware and looking for a fix before vene formatting XenServer

What switch(s) you using ?
We have just finished an identical build for another SMB client but hosted on VMWare essentials Plus 4.1 with identical hardware and so far everything is peachy

Cisco catalyst 6509

removed all vlan and enabled just one nic
formatted the machine and installed win2008, network speed is normal
re-formatted and installed xs6.0 and a win2008 vm, performance are dropping down again

Not quite a 'Solution' if you have paid for Xen.
