You cannot create virtual machines in Player unless you manually create the configuration files. You might want to use VMWare Server to setup your VMs then if you choose you can switch to player to run them.

Actually, you can create a VM in Player (see pg. 20 here:http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vmware_player40.pdf). VMware Server is past end of cycle (Jun 2011). It works ok, but VMware isn't submitting further updates/enhancements to it.
VMware. Player has been able to create machines since v3, v4 current and free.
My bad; it's been a while since I used anything beside vSphere. Thanks for the schooling :)
Although VMware Player and Server are available, I recommend getting VMware Workstation. They have a fully functional 30 day trial you can use to play around with the other OS you mentioned, and Workstation offers so many more features you can use. It's worth a look.

download vmware 4.1 or 5 wait for the email from vmware for registration when you have registered you get a serial number to use it in free mode
just go to vmware.com to download you can use it free for 60 days without registering
Be aware its vertually imposible to learn esx or vsphere inside workstation or player as the host needs serious hardware for that and it can not do a lot of advanced functions for that you need a physical server that supports intel-vt or amd-v in its bios
you need a 64 bit server for vsphere
