Reason caused RHEL 3 server auto restart?

Hi:

My server was automatic restart this afternoon and i was not to figure out what problems caused.

Can any advice how can i figure out the reasons caused the server restart? Any possibility?

*I do not set at cron job restart the server.

Have you put such a job in cron?

You can certainly check

cat /var/spool/cron*/*

And check if there is a cron job to do this

I would not put restarting in cron but there may be circumstances that may dictate that.

Can you post some of the system logs? Without any information, it is difficult to say.

Could be that the server overheated and BIOS forced it, that there was a power issue that caused it to reboot, it could be that there was a program that crashed the system and that prompted the reboot. I mean, it could be one of many many different things. It would be like going "My car doesn't work, what is wrong with it"

May be I misinterpret your comment.

A server can restart for a variety of reasons.
First, you have to analyse the logs.  In RHEL 3, I don't think "last" was configured by default.  You need to know what were the last commands issued.

Is there any corruption in any file system or is to too full?
Is there a problem with your server hardware itself? Overheating?

How can i check whether is software crash?? power issues?

 i do not install new software since day one, and it was running well previously. So i do not think is software conflict problems.

I don't know what kind of server you are using.  Are there any agents configured on it?

The OS is pretty old so I am suspecting the server is too.  From the logs you can know the timings it shut down.  How often does it?

Try doing a physical inspection right away.

I don't think it is a software conflict in the sense that one program caused another program to crash, but I was just saying that you could have experienced and issue where a bug from a program caused a crash that took down the system.

As far as where to start, look at your system logs.

/var/log/messages should be the first thing to check.  If you configured crash dump, http://magazine.redhat.com/2007/08/15/a-quick-overview-of-linux-kernel-crash-dump-analysis/
/var/crash you can use gdb and other tools to analyze the files to determine what caused the crash.

Depending on the server you have, checking its logs will tell you whether the issue was loss of power i.e. PS1 down, PS2 down.

/var/log/messages should have a panic/error a report following the bootup that would at least reference the reason the system rebooted.

I do not see any reference the system registered that dealt with the failure.
use memtest to test the memory as that is often the only thing that can trigger a restart event without recording the event.

What is the system?
Single/dual power supply?
A drop on the 3.3v (memory) below 3.0 will trigger a reboot

Very strange. Logs show nothing noteworthy (although really old install you have there. Kernel dates back to 2003).

First thing I'd do is run Memtest86+. You may already have it installed (would be an option during the grub or lilo boot menu). If not, it is really easy to make a boot disk for it. You boot with this, let it run its test for a while (it typically takes an hour to do a single pass, and will keep looping, repeating pass after pass if you let it), and it will report any errors. If you get any, then I'd replace the RAM.

Second, I'd test the power supplies. Power supply testers are fairly cheap, I think I got mine for about $10. Power supplies degrade with age, and 5 years is a common point for them to go out and cause funny issues like this. They don't often just completely die, but rather cause weird reboots and stuff before hand.

If everything else checks out, do a visual inspection of the motherboard. Clean out the dust bunnies (don't use a vacuum, please),especially out of the heat sinks. Most of the time you'll get something in the logs for a heat related shutdown, but based on the age of the kernel, it is possible it wouldn't, or at least not handle things right. Even if that isn't the problem (which a good chance it isn't), it still doesn't hurt things. The big thing to look for is if there are any problems with the capacitors. Sometimes, you'll get a bad cap, and it can cause problems of this nature. If it looks bulgy, like something leaked out, or discolored, then it is bad. Burn marks on traces also not a good sign.

I install the Dell Open manager and run the test.

From the report, it show nothing wrong. Power, memory, hardware, fan and etc.

Any ideas what to check? the server restart again.

What is your setting within the dell openmanage alert management platform events
Do you have any condition there configured to reboot the system on failure?

At this point, the information you posted suggests that either the power cuts off or something else is going on.  Often when the system resets (kernel panic, etc.) it is recorded in the bootup messages.

You could setup data collection scripts to get top -n 1, vmstat, iostat, etc. to collect data every five minutes in an attempt to see whether there is something common to events prior to the reboot.
