I'm have about 8 ESX / ESXi servers running 4.1 all using local storage and use vcenter to manage all of them. I do have a small xenserver enviroment that host my Citrix XenApp server only. My manager has noted that our support cose of vmware are going up and up. They have also noted that our XenServer Advanced Edition is much cheaper.<br />

Vmware ESXi vs XenServer

Citrix is the synonym for the virtualization and application infrastructure systems developed by the company of the same name. Main areas are application virtualization, Software-As-A-Service (SaaS), cloud-computing and networking. The two most well-known are Citrix XenApp or Citrix CloudPlatform.

Citrix

VMware, a software company founded in 1998,  was one of the first commercially successful companies to offer x86 virtualization. The storage company EMC purchased VMware in 1994. Dell Technologies acquired EMC in 2016. VMware’s parent company is now Dell Technologies.

VMware has many software products that run on desktops, Microsoft Windows, Linux, and macOS, which allows the virtualizing of the x86 architecture.  Its enterprise software hypervisor for servers, VMware vSphere Hypervisor (ESXi), is a bare-metal hypervisor that runs directly on the server hardware and does not require an additional underlying operating system.
