Can you clarify what you are trying to accomplish a little?  A PST can be copied off the computer like any other file and does not need to be exported as long as Outlook isn't running.

I'm trying to back up the mailbox at the workstation level.  So you are saying the normal .PST file can be copied off and then restored if necessary? Or just copied back?

If these are POP accounts then all the mail, contacts, appointments, etc are stored in one pst file (two if they have archiving enabled).  As long as Outlook isn't running you can just copy the file off the workstation for backup.  Depending on the OS and version of Outlook the default location of the PST can be in a couple different places.

XP w/ Office 2007 or less
C:\Documents and settings\userid\local settings\application data\microsoft\outlook

Win Vista/7 w/ office 2007 or less
C:\Users\userid\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook

Outlook 2010
My Documents\Outlook Files

You could use something like Sysinternal's PSKill to make sure outlook was closed before trying to copy the file.

pskill.exe \\computername outlook.exe

You can also use a backup product to backup while Outlook is running. BackupMyFolder! (for non commercial use) or PSTSTation Corporate (http://www.addonmail.com)
