Server 2008 R2 Backup to External HDD's

I am using Server 2008 R2's backup feature. I have two external hard drives that I setup to rotate for offsite storing. The first backup ran last night and was successfull. The problem I am having is it does not want to safely remove the external so that I can rotate the drives. It said the drive is in use although the backup is completed. I don't just want to pull the drive out.

I have seen similar situations and have had no problem removing a drive after disk activity had stopped. Windows on the other may not allow you to just sneak in the other drive - allowing it to play the same role (e.g. assme the same drive letter without a reboot)

When I setup the backup I had both drives plugged in and told it to use both. I then unplugged the one so that the backup can run.

you should be fine and can disconnect the drive in that case.
