locked documents and settings

I am using windows 7 and when I try to open documents and settings it is locked? How do I unlock this and MSOCache, recovery and system volume. Not sure why it is locked and I am logged in as admin.

Hi

If you select start and open your control panel, proceed to user accounts. select change user account control settings (UAC). ensure the setting is not set to high.
UACI'm also just wandering, are you referring to general documents and settings or or you talking about the folder "Documents ans Settings" (found in XP and 2003) that stored the user profiles? Windows Vista / 7 changed that folder name to "Users"

Documents and Settings is just a pointer. There is nothing there. You do not need to (and do not want to) unlock Docs and Settings, MSO Cache or System Volume. Leave those for Windows to handle.

Also make sure you leave the "administrator" userid disabled and then set your own userid as a member of the admin group (which you seem to have done).

Now your documents, email, favourites and all you need is in C:\users\yourusername.

It all works perfectly but is different than your old way of working. .... Thinkpads_User

Just note that lowering the UAC setting can make life easier for day to day operation, however it is there for your protection preventing unwanted changes that might occur by accident (user) or by malicious intent(user/virus). The risk comes in when the "UAC" is set to low and the account you are operating on is an Admin on your computer, it won't prompt you if unwanted activity occurs on your PC.

You guys are fast. This is why I love this site. I needed to know now and bingo, you have made my day and taught me a few things. Thinkpad Users is the correct answer but the other answer taught me a few things I did not know. I thank you both and yes, Thinkpad Users it worked well. I was able to open my documents with no issues. Great job the both of you.

This site is probably my best class. I have used this site now for over 10 years and it still makes my day. It is well worth the little pay to have good admins get me the right answers. I have even seen debates on this site as to why the answer is correct or not and came up with the correct answer. Know one can know it all, and it really helps when you get in a jam to know you have help and fast. Great job to all who work this site.
