MS Word and Excel will not open when using Sharepoint

To whom it may concern

I am working through a challenge with Sharepoint, Word and Excel 2010. The user is able to logon to the Sharepoint site without issue. The issue comes when they try to access a Word or Excel doc from the Sharepoint site. They receive the following error

Microsoft Excel cannot access the file <filename>. There are several possible reasons
The file name or path does not exist
The file is being used by another program
The workbook you are trying to save has the same name as a currently open workbook
I have logged in from several other computers to the Sharepoint site using the users credentials and was able to open the applications successfully. In researching the issue I have downloaded the hotfix from MS website: http://support.microsoft.com/hotfix/KBHotfix.aspx?kbnum=949405&kbln=en-us however, this did not resolve the problem either as I got the message, " There are no products affected by this package installed on this system."

The problem definitely is limited to this machine which is currently running IE 8. I also tried this using Firefox and got the same results on this machine. The machine is running XP Professional 2002 service pack 3.

Does it work 'normally' when accessing files from local storage rather than sharepoint? I am wondering if the file associations are broken

What is odd is when I right click on the file while in Sharepoint I get the error message but it actually opens up. If the file associations are broken I would think it be an issue on every machine but it happens on this machine only.
the associations are stored in the local registry so its quite possible for only one machine to have them screwed up

in the 'run' box, or a command prompt try re-registering the filetype with
'excel /r' or 'winword /r' etc. the /r switch forces a registry update to correct associations

Unfortunately, the switch commands did not work. The issue occurs only on Word and Excel files that have been uploaded to Sharepoint. Files that are not uploaded do not have this issue. Again, this only happens on this machine...very odd.
