server down need to redirect traffic to other server

I had a server go down.  All the data has been restored to another server.  Many procedures refer to the downed server by name in UNC.  I have already added the downed server's IP address to the other server and can ping the old server name for the time being.  However browsing using UNC using the downed server name does not work.  I know I can edit the hosts file to hard code machine name to IP address but the clients all get reimaged frequently and there are many images that would have to be reworked.

I need the downed server name to be viable but point tot the other server that has had the downed server IP address added to it.  Help.

TIA,
Tim

Use either DNS or Wins to add the old servername with the IP address of the new server.
In DNS create an A record with the old server hostname and the ip of the new server.
What isaman07 said will fix it.  If you have a client that is trying to resolve to the old IP, a simple reboot will clear the DNS cache or command ipconfig/flushdns.

Still waiting for the WINS part to be implemented.  I have to have that done for me as well as the DNS part.  DNS is set as PING does work but I cannot UNC to the data using the old server name so WINS is not updated yet or correctly.  Thanks folks.

The last bit was to add the OptionalNames REG_SZ value to HKEY_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters and supply the name of the old machine so that the new server will recognize the name and answer to it.
