Can anyone tell me why this has happened?  How can I fix this, so I can backup that hard drive?
The OS is Windows 7 64-Bit and the backup software is Acronis True Image Home 2011.
Thanks.  GadgetDude

it happens because of a faulty disk run the chkdsk function to remove any errors
else try sector by sector backup option
I am sure it will work
Make sure that the remote USB storage device is not FAT32

ASKER

I know I have done it before; but it has been so long, I forgot how to do a chkdsk on an external hd. When you remind me, it's gonna be an "AHA!" moment. LOL

Another way via UI is in My Computer - right click on disk in question - properties - tools - check now - fix errors automatically.
Well, DUH!!!
I knew I was going to hate myself in the morning when I remembered this.  LOL!

Your second suggestion via My Computer has already been done. Curiously, the results of that scan showed no errors or faults whatsoever?!
I will now try the CHKDSK option and see what happens.

I have a suspicion: There is a "MOVIES" folder containing about 20 or 390 movies for which I have used both AnyDVD and CloneDVD2 to make duplicates; as I don't like to play original disks which can be damanged.  If a duplicate gets scratched or damanged in some way, it can be replaced. Not so with an original disk. Perhaps, in the duplication process (with no errors known), something went wrong.
Will let you know the results of the CHKDSK.

Thanks!  GadgetDude
Er, TYPO: that was 20 to 30 movies (NOT 390!)
Normally command line shows better results than UI check done via My Computer.
Just run it CHKDSK H: without F key. It will run read only mode check so you will be able to see if system needs to be checked.
Noxcho:
Results lf CHKDSK h:

""0 in Bad Sectors"

Apparently, chkdsk found nothing wrong with the drive.
I am still suspicious of the movie files I referred to previously (I detest the idea that I might have to re-duplicate every movie in that folder - it would be a very long and labor intensive process).

Before I take this next step, I have decided to start "with a clean slate." I have copied the important folders from Hard drive "H" to the desktop and I am currently reformatting (NOT quick reformat) the hard drive. After than, I will copy the files back to the hard drive and see what happens from there; including the paragon software.
Will let you know what happens.   I thank you very much for all your time and efforts!

KAPLAA! (That's Klingon for SUCCESS)
Noxcho: I will not pretend that I know what just took place; but I will give you the sequence of events in the hopes that you might be able to explain this (it is ridiculous):
[1] All attempts at backing up drive "H - Multimedia" failed.
[2] All attempts at analysis as to the nature of the problem (including CHKDSK) found absolutely no problems or errors of any kind.
[3] When in doubt, start from scratch! (I HAVE HAD ENOUGH OF THIS!). Specifically, I transferred all folders and files from the drive to the desktop.
[4] Completely reformatted the entire hard drive (15 hours!). Then, did a CHKDSK on an "empty" drive, with no problems reported. Copied all files and folders back to the HD.
[5] Finally, attempted another back of drive "H" and it was successful!!!

In sum, I cannot explain why there was such a problem with the HD that all analysis couldn't find an answer for. But the minute I erased the entire HD and reformatted, now everything is OK. My suspicions tell me there was something internally wrong with the HD that could not be detected.

Thank You for guiding me in the direction of a solution.  THANK YOU!

It was difficult for me to award points to a specific comment by Noxcho. There were several valid comments that were made. So, in the best of intentions, I picked a couple of "comments" that led me in the direction of a solution. While successful, the final outcome was bizarre in that it was not what I expected.
I am extremely grateful to Noxcho for the time, patience and assistance given; even though I only "Partially" understood the solution.
THANKS!!!
P.S. Pursuant to comments made by Noxcho, is Paragon a better backup utility than Acronis? I was told Acronis was pretty good?!
GadgetDude
I think CHKDSK was my idea??
GadgetDude, I would download the HDD vendor made tools to test the HDD (find out its model and vendor and go directly to their website).
If it is WD then you will find their tools there.
If it is Seagate - same procedure. The fact that complete reformatting resolved the issue indicates that drive has failing sectors. And full reformat (15Hours) just excluded them from usage.
You are not protected agains this problem resurrection thus test the drive before you give your valuable data to it.
