How can I include franlink heavy gothic or a close approximation in a wordpress 3.0 site (css3)?  I'd rather not use an image.. text if possible :)

You need to have CSS for that.
p {
font-family:"Franklin Heavy Gothic",Georgia,Serif;
}

Open in new window

Note the other families mentioned? Reason for that is, if the person viewing the site does not have Franklin Heavy Gothic, then they will not see the font in the same way, so this way you can specify some alternatives. It is best that you stick with generic families and names, due to that.

Typically the ones to stick with are "times", "courier", "arial", "serif", "sans-serif", "cursive", "fantasy", or "monospace".

I was just digging through W3School's site and ran across this

@font-face
{
font-family: myFirstFont;
src: url('Sansation_Light.ttf'),
     url('Sansation_Light.eot'); /* IE */
}

Open in new window

That would let you specify a font, and then give a URL for it if they don't have it installed. Take note that IE specifies a special format, while all other browsers can use standard truetype fonts.

Check out Font Squirrel. Note that for @font-face to work, the fonts must be in the same domain as the page.
Another possibility to allow for substitution for fonts because these fonts would be available from your website is this great Wordpress plugin, wp-cufon.

This Plugin makes it totally easy to implement Cufon into your WordPress Blog. The only thing you have to do is converting your fontfiles and upload them into the plugins font directory. You can enable the objects you want to get replaced in the Admin Menu of your WordPress Blog
