The user interface version of the master page cannot be determined.

We're getting the above error when we set our custom publishing master page (based on Randy Drisgill's starter publishing master) as the default. I can't find much information as to what the cause might be, or what effect it may have. Any insights you can share with me?

It does allow us to choose to go ahead and set the custom master as the default master.

Hello,

in the web browser, go to http://server:port/_catalogs/masterpage/Forms/AllItems.aspx

(replace "server:port" with your server name and port number)

This will show you a list of master pages and their UI version number (3 is for 2007, 4 is for 2010)

Edit the properties to set the correct version.

The UI version 3 is used for master pages that make even 2010 sites appear to look like MOSS sites. You can try this out: grab a 2010 Team site, for example, and change the master page from v4.master to default.master. It will look like the old SharePoint version, no ribbon etc.

This can be used to when upgrading from 2007 to 2010, where people want to retain the look and feel of a 2007 site.

I had a feeling this might be at the server level - thanks so much, I will have our network admin make the change. This is a fresh install, not an upgrade, so I'm not certain why the version isn't automatically set, but as long as we can get it to work, I'll be happy. I will let you know the outcome - thanks so much!
