how to install sql profiler on SBS 2008

I've been trying to add sql profiler to the intance of SQL 2008 standard I have installed on the server for a week now and it keeps failing.  when i go to add new options i check the box for management tools complete but the setup never works and the tools are never installed.

I was told to uninstall sql and reinstall it but it did not help, it seems that the sql that comes preinstall on SBS for sharepoint is causing the profiler not to install and i cant uninstall sharepoint.

i've tried to force the installation with a script i found here but no luck.

anybody got any suggestions?

Ok, in that case try uninstalling only the shared components of SQL Server ( of your existing installation) and reinstall the Shared components along with Workstation components to get it installed properly.

If you receive a specific error all the times, kindly post it here so that we can check for options to fix that issue.

1. Uninstall SQL 2008 Express
2. Run SQL 2008 Standard setup and install advanced client tools
3. When it reports error 2203, return to step 2 and try again twice
4. Reinstall SQL 2008 Express

Have a look at this tech article http://blog.sqlauthority.com/2009/08/03/sql-server-introduction-to-sql-server-2008-profiler-2/

Hope this helps

.. hmm - no error- nothing bad "when i go to add new options i check the box for management tools complete but the setup never works and the tools are never installed."

why do you think you do not have it ?
try to search this file on the box
PROFILER.EXE
e.g can be in this location
...\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Binn\PROFILER.EXE

I've been thinking about uninstalling sql express but i'm afraid that will mess up sharepoint and other features already installed on SBS..

i'm gonna try again today and will give you guys the exact error..

by the way Profiler.exe is not on the box.. not by searching nor going to the path you gave

In that case, just uninstall the Workstation(client) components of SQL Server Express and install Workstation components from the full version of SQL Server to get it fixed..

Profiler is not available for express.

Not trying to install profiler for express, I have the standard version the problem is that SBS comes with express already installed for sharepoint.

At first it wouldn't even give me the option to check "complete tools" the option was graded out so I uninstalled all the shared components and that gave me the option to select the complete tools but the installation crashes and it says there's a problem but no error messages or codes . I'm gonna run it tonight again and will get a screen shot of the message

ok so installed i have 3 instances

Instance name          Version             Edition
Accounting                 10.0.1600       Standard
sharepoint                 10.51.2500     Express with advanced services
SBSMonitoring           10.51.2500     Express with advanced services

try to add a feature to accounting, so i check the "Management Tools complete" checkbox click next and it passes all the installation rules, click next and it goes into the installation but it comes and says "status" failed.. "sql server setup has stopped working"

i get the following exception help link in the logs.

http://www.microsoft.com/products/ee/transform.aspx?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&EvtSrc=setup.rll&EvtID=50000&ProdVer=10.0.2531.0

Ok, As mentioned earlier uninstall the client components of SQL Server 2008 R2 Express instance and install Standard edition of Workstation components which should work..

Or else.

1. Temporarily uninstall SQL Server 2008 R2 Native client from Control Panel.
2. Try installing SQL Server 2008 Workstation components
3. Once successful, install Native client of SQL Server 2008 R2 from here.

if you need just profiler  - do not unistall
install - missed tools from dev,  standard or up editions ..

as peryour orig q: "how to install sql profiler on SBS 2008"
use the above recommendations
and do not unistall already installed sql inst (if you do - you would need to reinstall all software apps)

yeah I just need to add the complete tools so i can use the profiler..  but it wont work..it keeps failing.  I purchased SQL 2008 standard with the SBS server

\if you try to install a new sql instance by using standard edition disk or install file Ijust make sure it is not standard edition)
do you get error?
if yes - what one?

be ready to open case with Microsoft and\or reinstall your server ...

the SBS came with SQL express installed for Sharepoint and sbsmonitoring.  I also received a disk with SQL 2008 standard which is the one i used to add a new instance and it installed correctly but then i needed to add the "complete management tools" becuase i need the profiler and it wont let me install it.  SQL express does not have the complete tools, only the basic tools

I dont understand what you mean by "if you try to install a new sql instance by using standard edition disk or install file Ijust make sure it is not standard edition"  how do i install a new instance by using standard edition disk and not being the standard edition???

Eugenez,

As per the error in the snapshot attached, SQL Server Native Client should be uninstalled before trying to run the existing installer. I've tried this approach in one of my machines when I faced issue similar to this..

Upgrading all instances to SQL 2008 R2 will be fine for all Database and other engines available.
It will give out an error for Workstation components..

I guess that you need to uninstall workstation components and install 2008 R2 workstation components from Standard edition to get it fixed..

it was very long post...

all people who have posted here - actually one another way told you to do what you actually did with MS help

So it will be ok if you instead of just closing this Q- actually show people appreciation for the time that they spent for you and tried to figure out what went wrong when you did pre-posting unsuccessful "fix"

EugeneZ, if i was to give points out just because someone recommends to contact Microsoft then everybody would just be full of points and that would be the solution to everything. of course contacting Microsoft is always an option but the whole point of using experts-exchange is to NOT call Microsoft and not have to pay for an incident.

I really appreciated all the comments and the time you guys spent but none of the solutions really helped me and none of the solutions were close to what I did with Microsoft

It would be of great help for us as well as those who visits this question later on,if you could share the solution with which Microsoft helped you out..
