Hi,
I have a HP Proliant DL320 G6 with VMware ESXi 4.0.0 releasebuild-171294.
The root password is lost and there is no grub loader.
is there a way to recover the root password without impacting the current set-up ?
EXPERTS please advice.

Use the ESXi 4.0.0 media and perform a repair.

or, you could just install ESXi 4.x to a USB flash drive and boot the server with that, it would get you server back up and running with ESXi 4.x, and you would then be able to see the datastore, and re-add the VMs to the Inventory.

If we perform a repair...there wont be a changes in any other configurations i hope.
since the server is critical and cannot take chances.

Having said that, i have been looking into the links given in the first response.
There is no further steps mentioned apart from use media and perform repair.
does this give me a screen of options where i can choose only to alter the root password field.

Just wanted to ensure i know what i am doing before attempting.

Personally, if the server is critical and you have no backups, I would re-install a new copy of ESXi 4.x, onto a USB drive on the server.

and then you can add the Virtual Machine to the inventory.
