Unable to save downloaded files in Word?

I am using Microsoft Office 2010.  I mark distance education courses.  The students submit their assignments to the server and I download from the server and save to my computer. I then mark the papers and send them back to the server.  On several occasions, the file will not download and save to my computer...the green bar starts to go across the screen but then stops.
I enable editing each time so it is not in protected mode so that is not the problem.  What might be causing this problem and how might I resolve it?
thanks,

Are you downloading/saving the unopened files, or are you opening them across the network? Best to do the former, then open them locally.

I am downloading /saving the unopened files.  Then, in order to edit, I enable editing.  I do this in order to mark the student work with annotations and grades.  Then when I try to save it to my computer it does not save.

OK. More questions. What version of Word are the students using? Can you "Save As" a different file name. Can you "Save As" an earlier version, say 2003?

That was the problem.  The saving activity was occurring across the network instead of on my local computer.  It was an incorrect sequence of events in the steps for managing the file.
