HP Mediasmart server - re-add the data drives after a replacement of dead system drive.

The system drive failed on HP MediaSmart 470.   I removed the 3 data drives for safety and replaced the system drive with a new drive and reinstalled the OS from CD.
I have now added the first data drive in bay 2.   The media smart Server Console shows the drive as "not added"   If I try to "add" it will format the perfectly good data drive.

Is there a way to tell the newly installed OS that it should still have 3 data drives?   Without having to format each drive and then replace the data!

I don't know these HP Media Smart Servers, but I assume that the 3 Data Drives have been setup as a RAID array, so you wouldn't get far when adding just one of the drives. Rather add all of them and then hope that the server recognizes them as an array (it may be necessary that they have be inserted in the same bay they were in originally). If it does, it shouldn't need to do any formatting. But you'll probably have to set the user rights on the file system again (and add the user accounts etc).

If it doesn't recognize the drives properly as an array then you might get better instructions by using HP's online chat, or just by restoring the data from your backups.

the 'system drive' also contained a database of the old data.. do you not have a backup of the 'system' of the previous WHS?  You may be able to attach the data drives to another computer and copy the data over to the new system. Either way you have to rebuild the data

you can try the information here
I found the answer after digging deep into Microsoft forums.     The solution is to reinstall the system drive and OS with the data drives in the server and the re-install will recognize them and set them up correctly.
Thanks all.
