Unable to install Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538242)
Hi,

I'm unable to install the following update KB2538242 to my Citrix Presentation Server 4.5. The update was pushed out using System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R3. I've tried downloading the update from the Microsoft website and installing it manually but this hasn't resolved the issue!

Can you remove all the files from the SoftwareDistribution folder?  They are safe to remove.  Download again the software and try again.

Do you have a link to the stand alone package please?

For some thing like that you have to contact MS support and they might be able to have such package for you.  If you have the license for the software, you should check with them.

This is a physical Citrix 4.5 Server uninstalling and reinstalling this software may brick the machine. Can you at least point me in the right direction as to what the software is? I'll have to present this fix before I make a big change like this. Also do you have an article of this fix where somebody got this problem before?

Would it not just be better to reinstall the Redistributed Package?

The Service Pack would not install for me because there was no way to locate a file called vcredist.msi

This is what finally worked for me:

Open Registry Editor, locate the following:

 HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\F942F94A19C0F79468FD2B85E5E8677B

and rename it to the following:
 HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\- F942F94A19C0F79468FD2B85E5E8677B

Exit registry and re-install the Service Pack:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=5638

You should now be able to install the Security Update and Windows Update will stop bugging you.

I do not know if I should go back to the registry and remove the "-" from the key, so will leave it alone unless I find something not working.

Windows Server 2003 was based on Windows XP and was released in four editions: Web, Standard, Enterprise and Datacenter. It also had derivative versions for clusters, storage and Microsoft’s Small Business Server. Important upgrades included integrating Internet Information Services (IIS), improvements to Active Directory (AD) and Group Policy (GP), and the migration to Automated System Recovery (ASR).
