Excel opens 2nd blank window with greyed out options.

I have a user experiencing a host of problems with excel. The main issue is this: Upon opening an excel document by double-clicking on it, two windows open. One is the document the other is a blank window with most options greyed out.

I have checked and unchecked DDE. I have enabled and disabled Lookup Wizard Add-in. I have custom modified the file associations using /e and %1 switches.  The last one actually seemed to fix it once... but then excel documents would not open through our web portal. Help meh! Thanks.

Did u try running excel in safe mode .

Click start- type exce /safe

hit enter..now check whether u get any error message. ..problem is caused by unwanted addin.

Done the diagnostics already. Nothing found.

Virus and spyware unlikely cause - no other system malfunction or instability and it's behind updated Kaspersky security suite.

I will try safe mode and report back. Thanks for the help!
Could you please post an image of the second blank window?
Does it do this for any file opened?
Is Persaonal.xlsb opening by any chance?

Ok - safe mode works fine - the program launches with no errors. I launched excel in regular mode and it launches fine.

The problem occurs when I double-click on a document stored in a share from Server 2003 AD. Two windows open. One is the document and the other a blank window with most of the drop down options greyed out.

The only add-on that was not part of the install is one for ACT!2010 which we need to do our job. I will try to toggle this addon and see if it is the cause.
Try this...
Go to Tools > Options, General tab. Uncheck Ignore Other Applications

If this does not resolve, undo the change

Ignore Other Apps is the DDE i referred to earlier. It does have an effect on the behaviour but does not fix it.

Problem might be with the user account..can u try another user account.

Btw the same issue exists in MS word 2007 on this same computer.

Great idea. Will try another user. Report will come soon.
Try loging into another PC with this users acct (so new profile is created) if the problem is not present...then delete the users profile on the initial PC
