External email address and external senders

So I know if I create an AD account and don't create a mailbox I can assign an external email address to it. This works perfectly if I add it to an internal distribution group and I want the external smtp account to receive it also.

Here's the catch, it doesn't appear to send to the external smtp address if a incoming email is sent to the internal distribution. I would have expected all on the internal distribution list to receieve it as well as it been automatically forwarded to external smtp address that part of the DL. It's not been sent back out

Anyone know why this doesn't work?

Why are you using an AD account instead of a contact? You are creating a security flaw. Contacts do the same thing with regard to emails (and should work with your distro list) but have no authority in the domain.

Good point but will this help with the issue at hand?

Change it to a contact... it will probably fix your mail routing issue
