Promote 2008 server to Master DC in 2003 forest.

Hello thank you for your time and input. Your expertise is greatly valued.

We have 2003 dc. I just added 2008 R2. Added to domain and ran dcpromo (after preparing 2003 first).

Now i need to promote the 2008 R2 to be the master of the domain.
Users do have roaming profiles, not sure if this makes a difference or not. Thought i mention it.

Many thanks in advance.

Now that i think about it. Do i need to make 2008 a Master DC?
What about the roaming profiles if the original 2003 server goes down?

I just looked on the new backup DC to see where users profiles are pointing to. And they are pointing to the old 2003 server.

How do I make the 2008 box the master DC and migrate the profiles.

Thank you very much.

You can move all the roles to the 2008 box if you wish. Why not keep both and just have backups of the user profiles on the 2008?

I'm not sure what you mean by "master" DC.  There are a number of FSMO roles that would be currently assigned to your Windows 2003 DC.  You can move them to the Windows 2008 DC if you wish and/or if you want to remove the 2003 DC from the domain.  Here's an article on moving FSMO roles:

As for the profiles, you can move them just like any other files. However, you need to ensure that you keep the same security settings on that set of folders, so you might want to use a tool like Robocopy or a backup/restore process rather than a straight move, so that you don't lose the permissions.  Then of course you need to edit the users' AD properties to point the roaming profiles to the new location.
