Sending email from Ricoh Aficio 3235 to local domain users in MS 2011 SBS Std network

I have a newly setup Microsoft 2011 SBS Std server which correctly sends/receives  email to local and remote addresses. The problem is that a Ricoh Aficio 3235C copier fails on sending email to any of the network local users. The scanner scans the document and then uses email to deliver to designated local scanner recipients. This scanning process use to work with our old Microsoft 2003 SBS Std server, but has stopped since the upgrade. The Ricoh can connect to the smtp exchange server. The on board test confirms the connection and also it is capable of handling the network print jobs and I can access the html console management screen on the Ricoh copier. But what happens when the scan is made the error message that comes up on the Ricoh display is "Transmission has failed."  I check the status on the Interface page report and all that is listed is: "dcs_nas(21) DATE-TIME-STAMP   SMTPC: connection closed. (202) ERR:" and the next line is  "dcs_nas(21) DATE-TIME-STAMP  SMTPC: connection closed. (801) ERR: "
I spoke to our local Ricoh Vendor and he suggested that I need to set up relaying in the Exchange server on the MS 2011 SBS server to enable these scanned transmissions to go through. My question is I really am not routing the scans out of the local LAN every host is in the 192.168. network. Isn't relaying use for passing off to another server so that it can use its smtp server to send out, The Ricoh has in its configuration file the Exchange server as the SMTP server and again testing communication to the Exchange server succeeds it is the transmission of the actual email that fails.
The Ricoh is listed with an A Record in the DNS of the SBS server. And the scanner user is listed in the AD of the SBS. One item of note in setting up the print server on the SBS2011 server the scanner server module was also turned on although there are no scanner ,machines listed . The fact is we really don't want the MS 2011 SBS to be a scan server it just needs to deliver email from the Ricoh copier.
Any help is most appreciated as at this point.  I am at a loss as to a successful resolution. Thanks,

Tim

Have you set up a user in AD for the copier?

I usually make a user "Ricoh Printer" and put that user name and password for SMTP authentication to the server to allow the email to be sent.

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes I have the user listed in the AD of which I have successfully tested the password by logging on this "scanner" user via a local computer and I tested sending email from and to this AD scanner user account.  I have this user set in the configuration file of the Ricoh copier and have carefully re-entered the correct password.

I have STMP authentication set to on and have even tried my AD administrator account also with out any success of sending.

I agree with aoakeley you have to set up a receive connector for copiers to relay e-mail with SBS 2008/2011. Philip Elder has explained this very well in his blog. You can skip over the Sharepoint p[art and go to the "Create a new receive connector" part.
http://blog.mpecsinc.ca/2009/09/sbs-2008-mfpcopier-to-scan-to-e-mail.html
Thanks for your input I will check out these links and report my results.
In order to get the copier to successfully send email a receive connector is required on the Exchange 2007 and newer servers.
Thanks RobWill for your affirmation of the solution.
Thanks aoakeley!
