Reinstalling SBS 2008 OS and then copying everything from SBS 2003 to SBS 2008
I would like to know what is the best way to do this :
I have a SBS 2003 running, would like to use the new SBS 2008 server as a backup and have it ready just in case. I would like to copy everything from the old server to the new server, same user, rights, groups, printers etc., nothing crazy. What is the best way to accomplish this :
I heard replicate the SBS 2003, no idea how.
Also before I give a new SBS 2008 server a name, what name should I give it, I guess it has to be different that the SBS 2003 server name.
Thanks

Unfortunately, you can't just pre-install SBS and wait for the old one to die. if you don't want to have to rebuild your domain, you have to install SBS2008 in migration mode. After teh SBS is installed, you have 21 days to move everything to the new SBS. If I were you i would go ahead with the migration. There is no reason not to.

Is there anyway i can copy, move whatever is possible without recreating users, mailbox etc ?
Can I restore a sbs 2003 backup on a sbs 2008 ?
How about domain names ? If I cant use the same one its not a big deal, i can always add a 2 at the end if the domain name.
Thanks

the name doesn't matter if you're going to perform an ASDM recovery. I still do not recommend going this route unless your old SBS has already crashed and you don't have the 2003 media. there are really no references because this is not recommended. this was something I was forced to do when a fired IT guy sabotaged a clients server.

Ok email me the references for the migration.

Just a thought. How about if I do a recovery from a backup just to see how it goes ?
I would do it in a test environment first. The one it me i had to do this, it took 14 days to do the restore right. the migration is best. it's easier than it sounds.
