ADPrep from Server 03 to 03 R2

I have an AD forest of Windows server 03 and I am adding my first 03 R2 Domain controller.

I did not think there was that much difference between the two, but it failed the wizard because I needed to run ADprep first.

I'm sure this is no big thing, but I'm not sure what the steps are, and most important, what will be the impact on the rest of my controllers...

Thanks

Right...

But this is only from 03 to 03 R2.

Is it still the same?

OK...

Next question:

I believe my Schema Master and Infrastructure ar the same machine. I believe it has always been that way.

Is this a problem? Should I change it and how do I check to make sure what is what?

Thanks for being on line and assisting!
from a command prompt on a domain controller, type netdom query fsmo

this will tell you which domain controllers hold which roles.  It is typical for a flat domain to have one domain controller holding all the roles.

Here are some recommendations on the roles:  http://smtp25.blogspot.com/2008/03/recommendations-for-fsmo-role-placement.html

Do I also have to run /domainprep /gpprep ?
Nope, this should be sufficient:

Run adprep /forestprep from the CMPNENTS\R2\ADPREP folder of CD2 of the Windows Server 2003 R2 mediakit on the Domain Controller that holds the Schema Master Flexible Single Master Operations (FSMO) role.
Run adprep /domainprep on the Domain Controller that holds the Infrastructure Master Flexible Single Master Operations (FSMO) role for the domain inside the forest in which you want to introduce DFS-R.

Finally:

I am running this against a DC in another Site (Remote physially), and doing my AD, DC promoting in this site.

I assume that once I am finished with the above I either need to wait until the domain replicates, or force a replication before the change will be noticed in this site.

Sorry...

After running adprep /domain prep, this is the message. Should I assume this is only informational?

C:\ADPREP>adprep /domainprep
Running domainprep ...

Domain-wide information has already been updated.
[Status/Consequence]
Adprep did not attempt to rerun this operation.

The new cross domain planning functionality for Group Policy, RSOP Planning
Mode, requires file system and Active Directory permissions to be updated
for existing Group Policy Objects (GPOs). You can enable this functionality
at any time by running "adprep.exe /domainprep /gpprep" on the DC that holds
the infrastructure operations master role.
This operation will cause all GPOs located in the policies folder of the
SYSVOL to be replicated once between the domain controllers in this domain.
Microsoft recommends reading KB Q324392, particularly if you have a large
number of Group policy Objects.

I have paid $3000.00 a month for support, that was not this good

Thanks
no problem.  happy to help.  I agree.  I get better response from the folks on here than any vendor support myself!
