Reauthoring a DVD
I have a DVD containing some episodes of a TV show (not made by me). The DVD is no longer available from the TV company (or any other source), and I bought it as a part of a set of DVDs containing season 1-5 for this TV show (containing 8 DVDs).
The DVD is partly unreadable, but I'm able to read the starting menu (DVD menu) and the list of episodes. The content of the episodes is available on YouTube, but due to the length of the episodes each of them is divided into two parts.
Using OpenShot Video Editor I can put these two parts together, and export them as MPEG-2 files.
There would be a sound glitch for about less then 1 second when the two parts are joined together, but that's OK.
But the challenge is: Which programs can I use and how can I re-author the content of this DVD, using the original starting menu (DVD menu) and making jumps to each episode so that they are pointing to the MPEG-2 files I have created using OpenShot Video Editor ?
I'm based on open source software on Ubuntu Linux.. :-)

Hi!
I'd use "Bombono". It's easy to use and you can create menus and link them to the videos quite easy:

toyboy61 are you able to copy the entire VIDEO_TS folder off the disc?
Have you tried to clean the disc using isopropal alcohole and a soft cloth.
Is the disc badly scratched?
Since you want to keep the menue header titles
There is many tricks to remove a scratched dvd, if it is enough to get the entire VIDEO_TS folder off you'd be set then and could just make an iso disc
http://www.wikihow.com/Fix-a-Scratched-CD
It is very possible to do what you ask for >>But the challenge is: Which programs can I use and how can I re-author the content of this DVD, using the original starting menu (DVD menu) and making jumps to each episode so that they are pointing to the MPEG-2 files I have created using OpenShot Video Editor ?<< because I am not familiar with Ubuntu / linux,
the tools you need is any authoring or video editing tool that has a video timeline where you can drop the files /create the menues and chapters.
Outside of Ubuntu the tools I use
DVD Flick exellent free open souce tool simple has a very good guide.
http://www.dvdflick.net/
Windows live Movie maker 2
Nero Vision
Power DVD
Now if you can get the entire VIDEO_TS off the disc I'd use Nero Rom to reburn this contents of the VIDEO_TS folder as is
you will get your DVD back exactly as it was.
There is a trick to reburning the VIDEO_TS folder ( contents only) since this is already authored.
How about you come back with your thoughts and ideas as to what you want to try.

The VIDEO_TS folder is the only folder which contains any files... :-)
No, I'm NOT able to copy the entire VIDEO_TS folder from the DVD.
I'm able to copy the following files:
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VIDEO_TS.VOB -> Warning about unauthorized copying/playing etc.
VIDEO_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_0.VOB
-> 1. Contains the main menu with two buttons: "Play all" or "choose an episode".
-> 2. Contains the title page where you could choose the episode you want to watch.
The files VTS_01_1.VOB to VTS_01_8.VOB contains the episodes (episode 41 to episode 50), but only the first of these files are (as far as I can see) readable from the DVD.
I have downloaded episode 41 to 50 from YouTube with the same quality as from the DVD (I suspect they have ripped it from the DVD and uploaded it on YouTube.. :-) ). But there seems to be a limit in file size for each upload to YouTube, so they have been forced to divide each episode in 2 (or 3) parts.
Then I used OpenShot Video Editor to put them together again and save them as MPEG-2 files.
The problem is that the files on the DVD contains various parts of each episode (i.e. VTS_01_1.VOB contains episode 41 and parts of episode 42) so I cannot replace each .VOB file with a MPEG-2 file containing one episode.. :-(
I have used ffmpeg to extract the main DVD menu and the title page from VTS_01_0.VOB as .png-files, but that's the point where I am right now.
My challenge is:
1) Activate the two "buttons" on the main DVD menu ("play all" and "choose an episode") so that they to do what the should.
2) Display the title page, and be able to choose an episode.
But DeVeDe and Bombono DVD seems to be unable to use anything else than embedded templates so I'm stuck with them. Or ... ???
One though is to use IfoEdit (I know - Windows only..) to display and alter information in the .IFO-files, but I'm not skilled enough (or have enough knowledge) to do this right now.
So I need help... :-)

Thanks,
how many of these can you copy>>VIDEO_TS.VOB
Really? -> Warning about unauthorized copying/playing etc.
you wont need the ifo /bup files since these are for the original directories
all you can do is get as many of the original vobs ie video_ts vobs those are the main movies
then take them including the extra video you have downloaded off youtube, stick them into one folder
so you have all the video episodes in on place
Youtube uses flash and converting them to mpeg2 may cause a distortion ( pixelate)
since the video scale is small in flv compared to mp4 or mpeg2
If you can use a windows that'd help me greatly as Ihave none zero experience with Linux.
Windows 7 preferred. It has Windows live Moviemaker
If you can get access to xp just use DVD flick
drop all your clips on then edit a menue
choose a main menue and chapters and it will author this to DVD with clickable chapters.
There is also DVD Shrink, google it as we are nolonger allowed to link it, but it will do an exact replicate of your DVD and burn that to a new DVD.
If you can get this disc to play in XP system or windows 7 dvd rom.
I can show you how to use any of these tips.

Use Bombono, add your video files, create a menu from an empty template, add your ripped PNG as background picture, add the buttons on top of the PNG linking to your ripped video. Burn an ISO and test your new DVD!

I finally ended up with DVD Styler. The GUI for this program (which is another frontend for dvdauthor and other programs) is easy to understand and use. I'll come back when I have finished the project..
Ok! I haven't used DVD Styler myself, but it seems to be capable of creating a DVD with buttons linking to the movie chapters.

dvdauthor was the right program to use. I only had to find the correct GUI for me... (which in this case was DVDStyler).
