We're running dedicated Windows-based ColdFusion Server (version 7), .. and are trying to find a better way to generate multi-page PDF files (of inspection reports) through our website.
The problem is that the PDF files contain photos in them, .. and there are known issues with CFDOCUMENT's inability to properly compress PDF files that contain bitmap images. This results in PDF files that are 3 times larger than they should be, .. longer download times, .. more server space requirements, .. and more bandwidth utilization.
We've already completed some initial experiments using ColdFusion 9's new CFPDF tag, .. but were disappointed to learn 2 things:
1) CFPDF can NOT be used to CREATE compressed / optimized PDF files. It can only be used to compress already created PDFs
2) CFPDF takes friggin' forever to optimize a PDF file. For example, .. a 32 page PDF took well over 7 minutes to compress !!!!
What would be most ideal would be to somehow completely replace all of our PDF generating CFDOCUMENT tags (in our existing source code) with something else entirely, .. something that results in more efficiently compressed PDF files, and that's relatively quick.
Does anyone here have any suggestions / recommendations for us? We are open to paying for a a 3rd party solution (if it works as I've described).
