How does it work in real life when I install a secondary AD domain controller?

I am running an AD domain with one server (windows server 2008). This server acts AD DC, DNS and DHCP.

I am now getting a secondary server to use as storage (many shared folders, need to break it up over another server).

Whne i install this server, and make it a backup domain controller, how will this change the every day?

Will it simply act 'backup' and take over if the main one goes down?

Should I run DNS on it too, to have it as a secondary DNS?

Is there anything I should think about before doing this? Any pro-tips?
