Outlook 2003 clients cannot connect to SBS2008 Exchange 2007, Event ID 1053

After a powercut last Saturday, only 2 of my 8 workstations can connect to Exchange with Outlook.
The others 6 running Outlook 2003 all fail with error 0x8004011D 'The server is not available. Contact your administrator if this condition persists'
I cannot recreate the mail profile with error "the name could not be resolved. The connection to the Microsoft Exchange Server is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action'

However they can ping the SBS server by name or IP address. DNS is set to the SBS IP.
OWA is working fine, Exchange is receiving and sending emails, and 2 machines running Outlook 2010 connect to Exchange.

I have found this entry in the Application Log :
Event ID : 1053 Userenv
Windows cannot determine the user or computer name. (The RPC server is unavailable. ). Group Policy processing aborted.
I have rebooted the server several times, checked that all services set as Automatic are running, restarted the workstations, I cannot get Outlook on these machines to talk to Exchange, they appear as disconnected.

did you check http://support.microsoft.com/kb/289971
also make sure both side dns resolution is working, i.e., name to IP and IP to name.
This really sounds like DNS; a 1053 error, RPC unavailable, and Group Policy processing aborted.
You mentioned DNS points to the SBS. Have you verified with an ipconfig /all that DNS still points to the SBS, and only the SBS? Often during a power surge a router can kick back in as a DHCP server and assign incorrect DNS. If the PC's NIC points to a router or ISP, even as an alternate, you will get these issues. also verify with the ipconfig that the proper DNS suffix is displayed.

If the client machine is running XP you could also do some testing with netdiag, but it has since been discontinued for other O/S versions:

I did check the MS KB already http://support.microsoft.com/kb/289971
both DNS and reverse DNS work fine
the OS is XP, what kind of test could I run with netdiag ?

I managed to get one more workstation to connect. This workstation has Outlook 2010 installed.
The only thing I did was add "DOMAIN\" in front of the username when Outlook asked for credentials to be renentered.
However when I check the Microsoft Exchange Connection status the top line of type Directory is still "Disconnected" see attached screenshot that could be a clue.
I still have 5 workstations with Outlook not connected. User generated image

Now we've tried to take a workstation out of the domain to a workgroup to rejoin the domain but it fails saying the RPC server is unavailbale.
Help please !
You just copy the appropriate copy of netdiag to your machine, open a command window in the location where netdiag is and enter netdiag. It will test automatically run numerous tests against your domain.

As mentioned have you verified with the ipconfig that the proper DNS suffix is displayed

Thanks Rob, we're still using OWA for half of the machines.
I don't have the netdiag results to show, but can confirm that the proper DNS suffix is displayed.
Any others ideas for tests to perform, places to check ?
You did run netdiag and there were no failures or warnings?
