Syncing files between laptops and server

I'm looking for a way to keep several laptop users synced to particular folders on our file server so they can be accessed when offline.

When online they work via remote desktop to our terminal server. Laptops are not on the same AD domain as the server (they're just in workgroups). Servers are in a datacenter, laptops all over the place, so the solution needs to work over the internet.

The server does have a static IP and we can open any ports to it from the internet.
I would like this to happen automatically every 15 or 30 minutes whenever there is a connection to the server.

Also I would like that if there is no connectivity then the software is just silent, with no error messages or anything.

I checked and it looks like a beta version of Goodsync can do this but i'd like something more "final" - i assume i would need a server app running there, and then a small agent program on each PC.

Any suggestions?
