How to rebuild dns zones - suddenly gone.

Hi.

Today when I arrived at work, the server was not working. I have had some trouble with this server for a week. The server stop working and I havent been able or had the time to resolve this problem. The solution was to restart the server and the managed switch and it worked for a while.

But today when I came to work, the restart of the server did not work. I found out that the clients could not map drives, could not print or in any way communiqate with the server. I could ping the server adress xx.xx.xxx.xx. When I searched the server for errors the DNS was not working. After repairing the DNS and reebooting the server, nothing changed - the forward and the reverse lookup zones were gone.....

After a while I tried to make a new zone - but get the error: ...required application directory partition does not exist. Only Enterprise Administrators ...appropriate permissions...

Active Directory cannot communiqate with the global catalog.
Internatl ID failure: 33200c89

The DNS gets an critical error from AD

WIndows cannot determine the user or computer name. (Access denied)

MS DTC could not correctly process a DC Promotion/Demotion event. ...... PID: 408 No Callback.

There was also a message that there could be two computers with the same name - the server and another computer. But I cannot find any other computer with the same name as the server.

Please - help me.
If there is more information needed I will submit it quickly.

Regards

Was this machine the domain controller ?
If it is then try a repair or go back to last backup.
If it is not then remove it from the domain (by taking it back to workgroup) and then add it back in.

initially remove network connection /connections from the domain ... go to services... make sure these services ar working fine .. DNS server, computr browser, server and workstation...

Hi.

The computer is a domain controller, I have restarted the services and they all start up without problems, but still the zones in the DNS are completly gone.

I am running an imcremental backup of the server, but need to backup some files since the backup is only sett to run every second day. Will the restore function also restore my problems with the DNS and Active Directory?

if the issue was there while backup mostly yes...
Do you have any other servers running that could be taking on the PDC job while this one is broken ?  It is possible one has called an election and taken the job.
While you fix this, close down any other server machines.

Now if the issue is still there.  Reboot and press F8 as it starts to load windows.
Select Domain Repair and see if there is anything you can do in there.

If that doesn't work go for the restore.

This type of work is best done out of hours so you do not have users messing with the server as you try to work on it.

It is the only domain controller. I have tired to restart dns, I am going to try to use the vb script that i got from ahaiksaj, but I have to make a new backup of the server this afternoon, the clients are using the servers ip adress to still be able to access the folders.
