I don't know if it's the same in Excel 2010, but for Excel 2007 you can disable it from the options. See <a href="http://superuser.com/questions/204790/turn-off-excel-2007-auto-update-external-data-on-open" rel="ugc">here</a>. Uncheck the box to update links to other documents.

I have an Excel 2010 spreadsheet that grabs data externally.<br />

When I open the spreadsheet it does refreshes automatically... this takes 6 or 7 minutes.<br />

I've created a button that will turn off screen updating, refresh data and turn screen updating back on in seconds.<br />
