Restoring an Domain Controller using Symantec Backup Exec 2010

Hello,

I am in the process of restoring a domain controller from a backup tape and I have a problem.

I select the system state, shadow components, C and D drive, but i am unsure as to what credientials to use as when I test the account i wish to use on the resource credentials screen I always get access denied messages.

The server to be restored is a windows 2003 Server.

Currently it is is DSRM mode and has the same IP address, Server name but not currently a member of the domain and juist in a work group.

The Firewall is currently disabled.

When I check the Agent from the backup server the backup server says the agent is installed correctly.

I am restoring using Symantec backup exec 2010 from a remote server with the tape drive,

The backup exec remote agent services are running onthe remote machine.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

You have to use an account that has at least backup operator rights on the machine that you are restoring to.  Do NOT restore the OS files.  Only restore the necessary data files.  If you select the complete C drive, it will restore the OS files and drivers, which could cause your server to blue screen upon reboot.  If you get the denied message, then the backup obviously will not work.  If you are using a domain account, make sure you enter the username in the format of domainname\username.

thank you for your reply,

I have tried a couple of accounts, they have all been added to the backup operators group and the local administrator group. Also have given them the rights to 'create a token object' and 'log on as a batch job' which i have seen on a couple of posts but this make no difference.

If i put in an incorrect password i get told I cannot access the server but when you put in the correct password I get the access denied message.

the usernames I am using have been in the servername\username format...

banging my head on the desk at the moment, I know it's something simple but what?
Have you tried a domain admin account?  Use domainname\admin for the username.  When I do restores, it is always with a domain admin account.  It should work with just the backup operator roll, but it is worth a shot.
Hello, I have tried a domain account also and failed.

This machine is not yet jonied to the domain and is a standalone server. (Ip address and name are same as before) I cannot add any domain accounts to the local administrators group.

I have added the domain into the network card manually in the DNS suffix for this connection to see if that helps.

I can get the authenication to work only if i uninstall the remote agent and in safemode/DSRM..if the agent is installed in safemode/DSRM i stilll get the access denied message.

This is the document I have been following but cannot get past the access denided message.

I can always just add it back manually to the domain and a DC and let the replication sort everything out, However it's the principle of having this software solution i place to restore A domain controller which should work. been on this all day and losing the will to live now.
I would join the server you are trying to restore to the domain and then attempt the restore.
