problem connecting to shared printer on xp client from v7 laptop
We seem to be having problems connecting to a shared printer on one of our XP pro clients from a new V7 pro laptop, on our SBS 2003 single server domain.
All of our XP clients can navigate and access this printer.
When I try to navigate the network to this workstation from the version 7 Pro laptop, I can see it listed, but when I click on the workstation to reveal any shared devices, I am told that we do not have sufficient rights to access it.
I have tried to share this on our Windows 2003 SBS, but again we cannot navigate to the printer.
It is very frustrating, just what am I missing, and what am I doing wrong?
Many thanks.

Do you have more than 10 computers connected to this printer? XP Pro has a limit to the number of connections it can have.

No, we only have around 5 computers sharing it. The problem seems to be that we cannot even navigate to the shared printer as it it indicates that we do not have sufficient rights.
I cannot see any area on the xp printer share option that lets me control who has access to it, as I feel that this is a share for everyone. The fact that other xp clients can navigate and access the printer confuses me somewhat.
Many thanks.

When I browse the network from the windows v7 laptop, when I click on the workstation that has the shared printer, I get the following error :-
\\wsname is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact your administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission.
Logon Failure : The target account name is incorrect.
As I said, I can navigate to the actual printer from any XP client.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

What happens if you add the user you are logged onto the w7 computer as, into the local admin group on the xp computer with the printer?

I have added the user of the v7 laptop to the lacal administartors group on the xp client that shares the printer, but it has made no difference.
When I log in to the laptop (v7) as the domain admin, I still cannot navigate to the xp shared printer?

I will give that a try. Thanks.
I have noticed that I can navigate to other xp clients shared printers etc, so it look slike it is just this particular workstation with the problem.

I have created a folder on the xp workstation and shared it for everyone. I can navigate to the shared folder on the xp machine that holds the share, but cannot navigate to it from the version 7 laptop. I have also tried to navigate to the new share from and xp laptop, and that too has the same problem.
What on earth could be causing this?
We are using AVG anti virus, butthe firewall component is not installed, just the windows firewall. As I understand it, this should be automatically configured to allow shared printers.
Any ideas?
Many thanks

Some additional information
I have also switched the windows firewall off, but this has not made any difference.
I can ping the workstation.
NSLOOKUP finds the workstation and translates the name to IP and vice versa.
Existing workstations can use the shared printer.

Are both the xp laptop and the Win7 machine actual domain members or just guests
Just reread some of your original posts - You have an SBS 2003 - Check your licencing - you may only have 5 cals that are registered -
IF that's the case - try turning off the licensing service temporarily to see if that is causing the propblemn - if that;s the case you need to purchase more cals

I found an article via google which was :-
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318030 which detailed information about a couple of services that may not be started.
Extract from Microsoft article :-
This behavior may occur if all the following conditions are true: •NetBIOS over TCP/IP is not turned on (enabled) on one or more computers in the workgroup.
•The Computer Browser service is not started or is turned off on one or more computers in the workgroup.
This behavior may also occur if File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks is not installed or is blocked by Windows Firewall.
There was a "Fix it" option, which I ran on the problem xp client, and this fixed the problem on the XP Laptop. It did however ask me to log in, although I had added the user to the local admin group.
The problem still remains on the V7 laptop though. This fix relates to XP only, but we did not need to run this on the laptop accessing the share / printer, just the workstation hosting it.
I will try disabling the licencing service, and let you know how I get on.
Many thanks.

This pointed me in the right direction, and whilst not resolving the network navigation problem from V7, I have managed to connect the shared network printer by using the local IP address, rather than navigating to it.
ie connect a new printer using \\192.168.1.23\kyof1, and this worked OK.
Many thanks.

Sounds like you are not pointed at the SBS Server's DNS - On Win 7 under DNS - You need to put in the domain name under the DNS settings (near the bottom) don't know why you need to - just found that it works)
