GNS3 - DOES ANYONE HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE TO RESOLVE THIS SMALL PROBLEM
Hi, Ive downloaded and installed: GNS3-0.7.4-win32-all-in-on e
Was able to click on 'Test' in program for 'Dynamips' which was successfull. As a result I can configure a router and ping interfaces successfully!!
Qns1. I wish to now add a 'PC' so that I can do 'pings' vice versa to router ?
I read that the below version will allow this:
- I then downloaded: GNS3-0.8.1-VirtualBox-Edit ion-Setup - This installed a secondary icon on my desktop as I thought it would integrate or something into version GNS 0.7.4 but it did not..
- On accessing this 2nd version on desktop and selecting 'Dynamips' and 'Test' - Fails, but Virtualbox - is successfull this time!!!
I have admin rights!!
If I remove all programs and just install: GNS3-0.8.1-VirtualBox-Edit ion-Setup - Dynamips Fails and Virtualbox is successful
What a waste of time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can anyone advise!?

Hi Ive completely uninstalled everything and 'ONLY' installed: GNS3-0.8.1-VirtualBox-Edit ion-Setup .!!
- Ive selected 'Test' for Dynamips successfully
- Ive added IOS
- Ive right clicked router and selected 'Start'
- Ive opened 'Console'
- Ive right clicked router and selected 'Idlepc' Successfully
- Ive selected after running a few times the 'value showing *' successfully
- Ive selected 'GNS3 Edit menu and 'IOS images & hypervisor' and ensured correct IOS was still saved and seen that 'Idlepc' has a value in place
- Ive dragged and dropped router onto right side of screen
- Ive right clicked router and selected 'configure'
- Ive selected router on left and selected on left screen the 'slos' tab and added the 'fastethernet and serial connections' I wish to use
- Ive started router
- Ive done 'Sh run' to confirm interfaces were added - successfully
- Ive done 'copy run start'
- Ive have not yet added an IP Configuration on the fastethernet interface yes that will link to the MS Adapter
All done!!
Ive added a 'MS Adapter' via my Win 7 laptop in Control panel/Device Manager - Right clicked anything in the list and selected 'Legacy' and added the 'MS Adapater'.
Ive checked that the 'MS Adapter' has been added and named it: 'GNS3' for eg
Just so you know Im using a 'Netgear' router which uses 'Dhcp' feature and allows internet to my laptop so Ive took this into consideration and added the following:
Ive added an address: 192.168.0.3 sm: 255.255.255.0 dg: 192.168.0.1 - Saved
cmd: ipconfig /all, release, /renew - MS Adapter/GNS3 is now shown and pingable
As I dont want to mess anything up at this stage, and presumably the above is correct so far!!
Qns1. How do I link the 'MS loopback adapter' to 'GNS3', so then presumably I will then be able to select 'Edit, Preferences and presumably 'Virtualbox' and select 'Test', so that Im assuming I can then drag a pc to the right side of screen and link to router ?

On dragging 'pc' to right I no get error: 'Virtualbox API module cannot be loaded'
So I did the following:
- Ive selected Edit, Preference, Virtualbox, General settings tab - Clicked and 'Test' -Failed
So
- I clicked on Virtuabox guest tab
- Clicked and highlighted the 'PC' I previously created and deleted
- On General settings tab - I clicked 'Test' and message stated: This action is going to delete your current topology, would you like to continue 'Yes or No' ?
- Clicked 'Yes'
- Clicked 'OK' to close window
- Drag and drop Virtualbox guest which was by default already in the left screen and put on right and received error: 'Please configure virtualbox guest' - So same issue everytime I do the above.!!
I then clicked:
Edit, Symbol Manager, Selected PC and moved to right window,
I highlighted 'PC' icon and above typed in a 'Name: PC1 and Type:selected in drop down list 'Virtualbox guest' and saved.
- Then selected the newly created 'PC1' and drag to right of screen which was successful
- Right clicked the 'PC1' that shows as 'N1' and the options are:
- Configure
- Show hide the hostname
- Change hostname
- Change symbol
- Delete
- Raise one step
- Lower one step
& no option for 'dos' console
This is the problem Ive been getting!!

Hi Ive just been looking for the specific 'URL' that I thought stated that the 'Virtualbox' was for 'Windows' and 'QEMU' was for 'Linux' - Oh well cant find it so will ignore!!! When I read the GNS3 website it states that the following:
http://www.gns3.net/download- The states the following:
Windows
•GNS3 v0.8.1 VBE all-in-one (unofficial version with VirtualBox support)
•GNS3 v0.7.4 all-in-one (includes Dynamips, Qemu/Pemu, Putty and WinPCAP 4.1.2)
•GNS3 v0.7.4 binary
- Ok then the 'Qemu' is an option in the Edit & preferred option
This site states: http://commonerrors.blogspot.com/2011/05/please-configure-qemu-host-ns3-error.html - that I need to download a file of an ios for qemu to work but the link only allows me to download some 'music frost setup.exe file' - I have not opened yet just incase it is not!!!!!!!!
I will follow these instructions and see: http://commonerrors.blogspot.com/2011/05/please-configure-qemu-host-ns3-error.html

I have IOS for routers but according to that 'url' screenshot at 'binary image: path shows xxxxx.xxxxxx.xxx.IOS.qemu- 0.13.0.pat ched.win3/ linux.micr ocore.2.11 .5.img.!!
Oh bye the way the 'Qemu' 'Test' button does work on the GNS3 v0.8.1 version although 'Virtualbox' did not!!
I have downloaded: 'qemu-0.13.0.patched.win32 ' but cant find the above '.img' within.!!
So I will uninstall completely again this version: GNS3 v0.8.1 and install: GNS3 v0.7.4 all-in-one (includes Dynamips, Qemu/Pemu, Putty and WinPCAP 4.1.2)

Ok! Ive just uninstalled all old version and re-installed the new version as mention on my last thread.
Ive then opened up GNS3 and straight away ran 'Test' which failed so I looked in 'Exectuable path' and looked for this 'dynamips.exe' file but could not find it. I then closed and reopened GNS3 which has entered a different file in the 'Executable path' - dynamips-wxp.exe - I then ran 'Test' and Dynamips was successful!!!!
Ive also done the following:
- Added relevant ios for 3640
- Dragged and dropped Router on right side window
- Added Interfaces
- Started router
- Can see interfaces that I have added
- Ive also right clicked and selected 'Idlepc' selecting the value with * and saved at Edit, IOS images and Hypervisors
I will stop now at this point until you message back!!!:)

I'm at work right now so I can't really do a lot of troubleshooting with you, but I didn't want to leave you empty handed. I want you to bear in mind that you're very close. That is to say, out of the box GNS3 with Dynamips only requires a few parameter settings to be edited and the IOS is a big one. I've included a link to have you read over for a tutorial. Read it over and keep your GNS3 environment as basic and simple as you can (for now...later I'll show you some cool stuff).
Once you get to the point that your router is configured with an IP address, you'll want to try to ping it through your "real" DOS shell....not the virtual PC. It is afterall the reason why we're using GNS3...to simulate a live environment which GNS3 is good at doing (the very best and I've tried others like Boson). You can only accomplish live "pings" by binding your GNS3 router with an MS loopback adapter. That is the major thought for the day.
So, get your router plopped onto your GNS3 map, right-click the router and configure it to "bind" the "physical" loopback to its virtual IOS interface. Then shell into IOS to configure the router "running-config" and set the appropriate IP Address.
Speaking of IP address, keep in mind if you want to ping the virtual router from your physical DOS, then both will need to be on the same network. Tell me your PC's IP address, subnet and DF Gateway and I'll tell you what to set your MS loopback and GNS3 router's "inside" interface IP addresses to
we're close bud, no worries

As my laptop is connected to my 'netgear box' which happens to run 'dhcp' it has allocated my laptop the following:
IP: 192.168.0.2
sm: 255.255.255.0
dg: 192.168.0.1

Just so you know as mentioned yesturday I already installed the MS Loopback Adapter and gave it a class C address:
ip: 192.168.0.3
sm: 255.255.255.0
dg: 192.168.0.1
So it is in the same range!
Saying that as Im gonna add a router to 'GNS3' and as Ive set the gateway as above, Im thinking I cannot add same ip address to router fastethernet interface, so Im thinking maybe I should just give it an address of: ip: 192.168.0.4 sm: 255.255.255.0 as it is an unused address ?
Let me know when you get chance!:)

Ive looked at the .pdf file you sent and while it is useful it uses 'Linux' for the specific eg of connecting a host pc so and not 'windows'.!
Ive configured the router:
Int fa0/0
ip address 192.168.0.4 255.255.255.0
no shut
MS Loopback Adapter - (Labelled GNS3)
ip: ip address 192.168.0.3
sm: 255.255.255.0
dg: left blank
My laptop as you know is already set with same class as above: 192.16.0.2 anyway although Im assuming this is not relevant other than the fact tha my ip addressing scheme is coming from my Netgear router.
From my actual real cmd prompt I can ping successful:
MS Loopback Adapter
Laptop obviously
Router interface
Qns1. As for right clicking on 'router' in GNS3 does not show 'binding' over any kind to link to the MS Loopback Adapter and nothing on the actual MS Loopback either, so not sure where for this part ?

Thanks Mike. As an added bonus, cuz you seem like a very eager and hungry student, I'd like to forward you a copy of my personal cisco engineering journal that I've compiled over the years. These are practical everyday commands and their parameters along with an explenation of what the commands do for further understanding. Please enjoy and best of luck to you.
