Can't terminate processes on Server 2008 R2

Last Modified: 2012-05-12
I'm trying to force down some processes so I don't have to re-boot our server as it's being used for the next several hours, but it appears that explorer.exe is locked up.

I was trying to copy a very large file (200 GB, system backup file from previous night) from the server to an external hard drive. The process was going very slow and it was obvious that it would not complete before our next backup was scheduled. So, I tried to cancel out of the process and everything pretty much hung. That is, the screen froze.

I was able to start Task Manager via ctrl+alt+del and tried to end the copy process as it was listed on the Applications Tab. I did get the program not responding pop-up with the End Now button. I hit that and it didn't help

I looked at the running processes and tried to end explorer.exe. No good. I then tried to end the dumprep.exe process and that didn't work either.

I saw something about AV possibly interfering with the kernel and possibly hanging things up, and I was able to end those processes, but still no go on getting anything else cleaned up.

Any ideas? Thanks
