mainframe vs tiered architecture

hi all

i never had experience on mainframe architecture, but I do know about regular enterprise tier architecture.
now, I would like to get more info and understand about mainframe a little more.
can anymore get me some straight explanations on differences on both??

There is although a strong difference between mainframe and x86 servers when you look at PEOPLE.
You have tons of vSphere/RHEL/Debian/Windows operators and admins available...and most of the time, you can't get out of them because there is always some support needs on those OS...
