Linux configuration

I am trying to install a linux OS to use as a web filter from Smoothwall on a server. I was able to install it and give it an IP and defalt gateway but I cannot access it. I cannot ping it and visa versa. I configured a laptop on the same subnet and put both switch ports on the same vlan. I should be able to at least ping the laptop and visa versa. I know next to nothing about Linux. When I do cat /proc/version it comes back with Linux Version 2.6.16.60-6-SMP (GCC Version 3.3.5). The vlan that it is on is used by wireless users. From the switch I can ping the laptop but I cannot ping the server. What command can I use to change the default gateway? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
