Unable to Open Shared Calendars Outlook 2003 on Exchange 2010

Hi,

I have seen a heap of issues on EE about Shared calendars but none mentioned Exchange 2010 as the Server.

A little background:
We were running Exchange 2003 with Mixed Office 2003 / 2007 clients
It was time to decom the 2003 server so we transitioned from 2003 to 2010 following some detailed guides, plus after undertaking the MS10135A Configuring, Managing and Troubleshooting MS Exchange Server 2010 Course.

I believe everything has been done correctly before completely removing the 2003 server, however of late, most users who share calendars (and I must say here, they are shared correctly as they were working perfectly fine when we were running Exchange 2003 have been getting unable to display the folder. THe information store could not be opened.

This seems to only be happening in 2003 (2007 seems to be OK)

This is what I have done to date:
Exchange Auto Config is set correctly (CTRL Right Clicking the Outlook Sys Tray Icon and entering the users password)
Removing the users calendar from Other Calendars and then pressing Open a Shared Calendar and starting from the beginning
Confirming that the shared users calendar perms are still set correctly and even turning all sharing off and re-sharing it
Deleting the user who is trying to open the shared calendars Outlook profile and re-creating
Successfully opening it within 2007 everytime

This is not happening to all shared calendars but the majority.

Any suggestions, good or bad will be greatly appreciated :)

Thanks

Did you replicate the public folder (system folders) free/busy information to new Exchange 2010 infrastructure?

From the explanation, it looks like the Outlook 2007 clients are reading the information from Availability Service not from public folder. Whereas Outlook 2003 still reads the information from public folder.

Are you able to see other users free busy information of other participants when scheduling meetings from Outlook 2003?

Revisit your migration approach..

Hi Thanks for the reply. Yes I did replicate the public folders before retiring the exchange box.

The way I did this was:
Opened System Manager
Right Clicked my Exchange 2010 Admin Group and Chose New --> Public Folders Container
Expanded the folders container on Exch 2003
Dragged the Public Folders from 2003 to the 2010 Public Folders Container
I am looking in the Public Folder Management Console in Exch 2010 now and all Default and System Public Folders are visible.

HI Praveen, thanks for the info, can you please let me know where I view these client settings? Is it in the EMC or on the Client?

Also I did follow the uninstallation of the Ex2003 box but the uninstallation failed. I found this information this morning:

http://smtp25.blogspot.com/2007/08/no-freebusy-information-could-be.html

I have followed the instructions and made the change as my old server was still being referenced.

Cheers
Yes, you should look it from EMC (mailbox database properties in Organization Configuration -> Mailbox)

As you mentioned, the users are being directed to old server, that is the reason why the information are not available to old Outlook Clients.

When your uninstallation fails, that was an indication that it was still being referred. Anyway, try doing it and see if you are able to see the new Free/Busy information.

Easier option would be upgrade your Outlook Client for critical users.. and try working on it..

Thanks Praveen, I was just coming back to write here that I found it.

The Public Folders are being pointed at the 2010 Public folders so good news there.

Oh yes, I 110% agree with you in saying that the upgrade to 2007 / 2010 would fix this and believe me this month that will happen for most. There is just one user in particular... the PA to our CEO that is throwing her toys and unfortunately we need to jump when she does so. The problem is she does not want 2007 / 2010 as she does not have training in it. The long and the short of it is that she will receive training and she will get it but in the meantime this has indicated that we do have a problem, therefore trying to resolve it.

Thanks very much for your help.

Okay,

Since the replication has not taken place correctly from 2003(from what I understand), you may have to live with the current data in Public Folders.

Anyway, you should be able to get the new(since the migration date) Free/Busy information in Oultook 2003 as well from the 2010 public folders.
