That's one of the utils I had in mind. It usually either comes as a self extracting boot image for FDD or a compressed .iso for a CD. Either way it's a tiny file. It's the kind of file that there are thousands of fakes containing nasties out there waiting to be downloaded so shields up and maximum suspicion on any you get.

maybe i could extract the bios and then edit it and then replace it?
by using a utility like winphlash, although i wouldnt know where to start on that! If i succeed great, if i dont, then its not a big loss but i would like to be able to edit it!

How about finding out from the encoder manufacturer if it's possible to re-link to a new BIOS?
You might be able to use a BIOS editor like Phoenix.BIOS.Editor http://www.4shared.com/get/NgAlE0L_/PhoenixBIOSEditorProv2213.html to edit a binary image of the BIOS, then flash that image to the BIOS.

how would i start that? where would i get a binary image??
Programs that can flash a BIOS usually can create a binary image as well, because people need backups.
