This is an improved version I was asked to solve with no luck so far:
An old man standing before two doors, one to freedom the other to death. This man lies one day and tells the truth the other day, you don't know if today he is telling the truth.
You have to ask one question only that will lead you to the door for freedom.

Now go back and ask your friend what he would do if there were 13 people milling about who either tell the truth always, lie always, switch days at random, or switch every hour.
Original version: If you were the other man, what would...
Your version: If you were the other day, what would...
General solution: If you were the opposite of what you are, what would...
But I'm over analyzing this (a common habit of mine).
