PC Mover by Laplink is one of the few programs I have seen that willl do this.

Also, if your Windows XP install is OEM, you may have difficulties moving the installation as it might not activate.

OEM copies can replace the hard drive - just not the motherboard - that's changing the computer.

There are a variety of freeware tools that will let you do this -- but none that I'm aware of is as simple as Paragon's $20 SSD Migration tool, which does the resizing; moving, and automatic exclusion of any data necessary to allow the OS to fit on the SSD.

http://www.paragon-software.com/technologies/components/migrate-OS-to-SSD/

If you really don't want to spend even this modest amount, the steps you need to do are as follows ...

(a)  Resize the partition on the old drive to a size that fits on the SSD.     If there's too much data on the partition to do that, you first need to move data to another drive until you're able to do that.   [Paragon's tool automatically does this; and also "knows" what critical system files can't be moved elsewhere]

(b)  Once the partition is resized, you can simply clone it to the SSD.

(c)  Set the partition on the SSD as active.

Done :-)

If you have an Intel SSD, they have their own migration tool:

You can also make an image of your hard drive with Norton ghost < illegal link removed by Page Editor>
