Most laptops have a VGA output, so just attach the laptop to the monitor's vga cable if it has such an output. If it has something else like a DVI port you most likely need a DVI to VGA adapter.
If you laptop is dismantled you have to be careful not to short anything out, but if you have your power connected to the motherboard, and have your laptop keyboard also connected to the mobo and connect your external monitor to the blue vga connector of the mobo you are then ready to power on your system to test it. You may need to press the fxn key and the key that has a picture of a monitor on it usually F5 of F7 or maybe some other F key.
